Belgium
Belgium is an interesting country. It covers a very small geographical area, yet its inhabitants speak French, Flemish and English. It is a place life's treats, producing some great beers, excellent chocolates and seeing much of the world's diamond trade.

 

Antwerp is famous for its diamond trade but also has a dynamic party vibe for those in the know. Bruges is a crowded medieval charmer not to be missed, while Brussels is stuffed with chocolate shops, Art Nouveau architecture and surrealist art. It's not difficult to cover the three cities in as many days, leaving you time left over to pop to France for a drink, or just soak up some countryside.

 

Food
Apart from Belgian beer and Belgian chocolate, there are plenty of other culinary treats to enjoy in Belgium. It benefits from proximity to the Netherlands and France. The national dish may be mosselen/moules, which are mussels cooked in white wine, served in big steaming bowls, usually accompanied by mountains of fries. Fries are popular street food, and generally come smothered in mayonnaise. Sandwiches, grills and casseroles are also staples, especially for leisurely lunches, according to the season. The French influence is apparent in fabulous pastries, especially those incorporating chocolate. The country's cross roads status and colonial history are also evident in a wide variety of diverse cuisines, African, Asian and others can be found throughout towns and cities.

 

Getting Around
Cycling is a popular past-time in Belgium and there are plenty of wonderful bike paths and tracks throughout the country. Climate
Belgium's climate can be damp. It sees high annual rainfall, and can be particularly grim between November and March. In these wintry months, skies are grey, drizzle can be almost constant, and days are short and cold. Much better to go between May and September to enjoy warm sunshine. Belgium generally avoids the oppressive hotness which characterises European cities further to the south in July and August.
