With a population of 1.3 million, Milan is a glitzy, sophisticated city. A home of fashion, and wealthy from manufacturing, it is often accused of being money-obsessed. Unlike many European hotspots, Milan is almost completely deserted during August, when everyone flees to beach resorts and holiday destinations.

Milan is the home of top models, and overpaid football (soccer) players, and definitely a shopper's paradise. It also offers a few tourist attractions, the most famous of which being the spectacular Duomo, with a 40,000 capacity and an incredible façade. It also offers incredible views from the roof.

Don't forget the beautiful Galleria Vittoria Emmanuale II, perfect for a stroll. It leads towards La Scala, the world's most famous opera house – consider taking in a performance. Leonardo's Last Supper, the painting at the centre of The Da Vinci Code, is available for viewing at Cenacolo Vinciano, but book ahead to ensure you get in. Decide for yourself whether one of the apostles is actually Mary Magdalene.

Food
Italy is rightly famous for its wonderful food, though some adaptations in our home countries mean it's necessary to take care when seeking the authentic in Milan. The delicious carbonara has commonly been mal-adapted abroad to be a heavy, creamy affair. Try the genuine carbonara at Osteria de Lazzaretto, where egg, parsely and prosciutto are stirred through piping hot pasta. It's rich, simple and no cream in sight! Also look out for traditional cuisine of Lombardy including Milanese veal cutlets, osso bucco with gremolata, and saffron risotto Milanese.

Airport
Most international flights arrive at Milpensa airport, about 50km from Milan. Numerous of our car rental suppliers are represented at this airport, so you can collect your great value Milan rental car and go!

It is important to note that some domestic and a few European flights arrive and depart from the smaller Linate airport, which is only 7km east of the city. Make sure you know which is your airport!

A Milan car rental really comes into its own when getting out and about in the Italian countryside. The region of Lombardy, around Milan, offers some lovely scenic drives. A particular favourite is Lake Como, only a half hour drive from Milan. The town of Como offers some great vantage points over the lake, with snow capped peaks providing a lovely backdrop. You can also take your bargain Milan rental car to visit the villages of Tremezzo, Varenna and Bergama, which has possibly the most stunning plaza in Italy. Get out and about, and see the countryside.
