Oslo is the capital and largest city in Norway. Founded around 1048 by King Harald III of Norway, the city was largely destroyed by a fire in 1624. The Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV rebuilt the city as Christiania. In 1925 the city reclaimed its original Norwegian name; Oslo. The diocese of Oslo is one of the five original dioceses in Norway, which originated around the year 1070.
Oslo is the cultural, scientific, economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is also an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. Oslo is considered a global city and ranked "Beta World City Plus" in studies performed by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network in 2008. Oslo has for several years been listed as one of the most expensive cities in the world alongside cities such as Tokyo, Copenhagen and Paris. In 2009 Oslo regained its status as the world's most expensive city. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme.
Oslo Airport, Gardermoen is the principal airport serving the Norwegian capital of Oslo. It acts as the main domestic hub and international airport for Norway, and the second-largest airport in the Nordic countries. A hub for Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Wideroe, it serves 25 domestic, 27 European and 5 intercontinental destinations. More than 18 million passengers traveled through Oslo Airport in 2009, of which 8.6 million were domestic-making Gardermoen the sixth-largest domestic airport in Europe.
The airport is located at Gardermoen in Ullensaker, 35 kms (22 mi) north-northeast of Oslo. The airport is connected to the city center by the high-speed Gardermoen Line served by mainline trains and the Flytoget airport express train.
