Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is a country in Central Europe touching the Alps and bordering the Mediterranean. Slovenia borders Italy on the west, the Adriatic Sea on the southwest, Croatia on the south and east, Hungary on the northeast, and Austria on the north. The capital and largest city of Slovenia is Ljubljana.

Slovenia covers an area of 20,273 square kilometres and has a population of 2.06 million. The majority of the population speaks Slovene, which is also the country's official language. Other local official languages are Hungarian and Italian.

There is not a saying more apt to describe Slovenia than the popular “great things come in small packages”.  Slovenia’s size is a contrast to the humongous measures of its European contemporaries, but its offerings do not come short in magnitude.  Travelers who have had the fortune to drive a car hire around Slovenia say that the country is a compact Europe.  It has most of the elements that make for a great European car rental holiday – Gothic churches, magnificent castles, baroque palaces, artistic buildings, sunflower fields, vineyards, Alpine mountains and rambling beaches.  One unique characteristic of Slovenia is that it snows even in summer, so people can enjoy the warmth of the weather and the glacial beauty of the Alps.

Going around Slovenia

If you’re planning to go around Slovenia using public transportation, you have to study the trains’ and buses’ route and schedule especially on weekends when public vehicles are very limited.  Trains have a fairly extensive coverage and are cheaper than buses, but an inconvenience to riding the train is having to get on and off the Ljubljana station to reach most routes.  For towns not serviced by the train, there are buses that go around.  However, driving a car hire in Slovenia provides the best form of convenience and mobility.  Driving a car rental lets you see as many places as you want on at your own pace.

From the Airport

The main international airport of Slovenia is the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, located 19 kilometers to the north of Slovenia’s capital city, Ljubljana.  There are public and private buses that transport passengers from the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport to Ljubljana downtown.  The trip takes about 30-45 minutes by bus.  There are taxi cabs found opposite the airport terminal, with more taxis terminating when there are more flights coming in.  Car rental companies are also aplenty at the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport.  You may conveniently negotiate for a fantastic deal Slovenia car hire on our site and pick it up when you arrive in Slovenia.

Places to See

You can easily plan your Slovenia car rental holiday by researching on each region’s attractions.  Here is a rundown of a few famous tourist destinations in Slovenia.  You’ll surely want to drive your car rental around Central Slovenia where the capital city, Ljubljana, is found.  You shall find the captivating Fountain of Three Carniolan Rivers, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, the Town Hall and the Ljubljana Cathedral.  Kamnik is also a great place to drive your car hire as it is a charming medieval town protected by the enchanting Kamniške Alps.  Other destinations you have to see are the Almerigogna Palace (Koper), Bled Castle (Bled), Predjama Castle Cave (Postojna) and the Savika Waterfall (Bohinj).  Also enjoy the rich Slovenian cuisine and have your fill of these goodies: Kraški pršut (air-dried ham), štruklji (dumplings prepared 70 ways), jota (soup loaded with meat, sauerkraut, beans and potatoes), potica (nut roll with filling) and gibanica (cream-topped pastry made with poppy seeds, raisins, apples, walnuts and cheese).

Nearby Country

Italy is just near Slovenia and going on an Italy car rental holiday will allow you to have a sip of the world’s best champagne and to stroll in its sprawling vineyards.
